I honestly don’t get what it is about me and my personality, however I tend to wind up in tasks where I am a jack-of-all-trades.
Even if the position does not originally start out this way, somehow I tend to gain more and more tasks until I am basically covering everything there is.
It’s kind of cool to have such diverse abilities and responsibilities, however it can also be absolutely overwhelming when I have to keep my brain heavily focused on numerous distinct areas. Recently, I was up for a new task and the process seemed to be going unquestionably well. I was enthusiastic about the task posting and it seems like I would be a fantastic company fit. The only thing that started to truly concern me was when they were telling me there were a few assorted tasks that might be put on my plate. Here we go again, I thought. One of the random tasks was to act as a steward of the heating and cooling equipment for the entire office! When I asked what was meant by this, my future boss told me that nobody absolutely wanted to take care of the forced air furnace and central air conditioning equipment. The furnace had broken down numerous times the other year because it had not been professionally taken care of in years. The air conditioning equipment had been slowly failing overtime because it was 20 years seasoned and required professional inspections. Somebody needed to step up to the plate and manage the routine service appointments for the entire Heating, Ventilation, and A/C system. He stated there was no budget for this air quality project, so I would need to wheel and deal to update and maintain all the air handling equipment. When I heard about this crazy uphill Heating, Ventilation, and A/C equipment battle being dumped on my plate, I right away reconsidered getting into this company.
