I really do not understand what it is about me and my personality, but I tend to wind up in tasks where I am essentially a jack-of-all-trades.
Even if the position doesn’t originally start out this way, somehow I tend to acquire more and more work until I’m basically covering everything that is done in the company.
It’s kind of thrilling to have such diverse abilities and responsibilities, but it can also be severely overwhelming when I have to keep my brain heavily on various distinct areas… Recently, I was up for a new task and the process seems to be going relatively smoothly. I was gleeful about the task posting and it seems basically like I would be a good fit! The only thing that started to become a problem for me was when they let me know that there were a few assorted tasks that might be put on my plate. Here we go again, I thought… One of the random tasks was to act as a steward of the heating and cooling machine for the entire office… When I asked what this meant exactly, my future boss told me that nobody entirely wanted to take care of the forced air oil furnace and central a/c machine. The oil furnace had broken down a bunch of times last year because it had not been professionally tested in a decade. The A/C machine had been slowly breaking down overtime because it was 20 years seasoned and required regular professional inspections. Somebody actually needed to step up to the plate and manage the routine maintenance and repair appointments for the entire Heating and Air Conditioning machine. He said there was no budget for this air quality project, so I would need to wheel and deal to replace and maintain all the air handling machines. When I heard about this insane Heating and Air Conditioning machine battle being dumped on my plate, I right away reconsidered taking the job.
