Off grid residing is a choice that has given my hubby and I an infinite world of joy. He and I were engaged and residing in the city, surrounded by debt and anxiety five years ago. The two of us were always fighting to pay our bills and make ends meet, all while drowning in student loans and vehicle payments, then it was exhausting. While the people I was with and I made each other happier, my hubby and I both knew the people I was with and I were not ecstatic with the state of our lives. But what else could the people I was with and I do? If you’re willing to take the risk, the answer is a lot. It took us numerous years of finally working absolutely long hours and saving rigorously, but my hubby and I were finally able to afford the plot of land in the mountains of Vermont he and I had been coveting… After that, a couple more years of saving and paying for building materials to slowly put our dream lodge together. Though our build is simple, is has lots of technology that makes our lives easier. Then heating and A/C component has come a long way, and our heat pump–powered by solar panels–really makes our lives easier. Instead of chopping up wood to heat the farm house every day, my hubby and I only absolutely need to use the wood stove when it drops below 17 degrees, which is not that often. And don’t let the heat pumps name fool you, this ductless mini split Heating and A/C method provides both heating and cooling. It works to shove the boiling air outside in the summer, so my hubby and I can be comfortable year round.
