When my friend Josh lived with me last year, i thought it would be great. However, we were always in a constant battle over the thermostat. In the winter, he kept cranking the temperature up to over 74 degrees so that the gas furnace had to run almost constantly. The hot air pouring through the heating vents and ductworks felt enjoyable during the winter, sure, however the cost to keep the house at that temperature was astronomical! And that’s not the only problem. During the summer season, Josh was even worse at messing with the digital thermostat in the house. He complained that it was too hot, so he’d turn the air conditioning down to 65 degrees and let it run and run. He even left the air conditioning running when we weren’t going to be at home, and so the air conditioner and heating bills that I got in the mail while he was living there were just really ridiculous. I even thought about getting one of those locking clear plastic boxes to put over the top of the thermostat to keep him out of it! I finally provided up and let him set the temperature to whatever he wanted it to be, although I made him pay the utility bills himself. That seemed to make a difference in the levels that the thermostat got set at – if he had to pay for the heating and air conditioning, he magically found that maybe he wasn’t so hot (or so cold) after all. It was a miracle!
