When my cousin Josh decided to be roommates last year, we were always in a constant battle over the temperature control. In the winter months, he kept cranking the temperature up to over 73 degrees which made the furnace run non stop. This was a problem for me for several reasons. One, the apartment was too hot. Then there was the fact that the HVAC system couldn’t take the constant wear and tear. The biggest reason was the fact that the utility bills were through the roof. We had the opposite problem during the heat of summertime, Josh was even worse at messing with the digital temperature control in the family room. He whined that it was too hot, so he’d turn the thermostat down to 65 degrees and let it run and run. He even left the system running when we weren’t going to be at home so the bills that I got in the mail were enough to give a healthy person a heart attack. I even thought about getting one of those locking clear plastic boxes to put over the top of the thermostat to keep him out of it! I finally gave up and let him set the temperature to whatever he wanted it to be, but I made him pay the utility bills himself. That seemed to make a difference in what temperature he found comfortable. He magically found that maybe he wasn’t so hot or cold after all. Most times when the reality of life hits (especially in your wallet) people seem to find a way to adapt and make changes that are more logical. It was a miracle!
