When my wife and I had to live with my in-laws for a year while our home was being built, the main problem that we ran into was not with them being too controlling, or us fighting with each other, it was something much more important. We had a constant battle over the temperature of the house. My wife and I would pitch in on chores, groceries and even cooking, but her parents would not allow us any say in the temperature of the house. My mother-in-law was always cold, and I was always hot. Being too warm is a big problem for me because I not only get crabby, it makes my joints swell because I have certain problems with my bones & joints. However, my mother-in-law has poor blood circulation, and so she’s constantly freezing. It’s pretty easy to see how the problems between us could start regarding the air conditioner and heating! Luckily, the the area where we were living is only really hot for a couple of weeks out of the year. I tried very hard to keep cool using a ceiling fan, however when the temperature is 70 or 80 degrees outside, it gets so stuffy and hot inside the house that it wasn’t much help. Whenever I would turn the temperature control down, even a couple of degrees, she would start yelling that it was cold in her room! I didn’t want to be rude but I wanted to tell her that if the air conditioning system was working so well in her room, then maybe we should switch rooms instead, since ours felt like the furnace was running!
