When I was working in a real estate, I learned that there was a major difference in air filters for heating and cooling components. I was surprised to learn that products people use to filter air would generate a significant difference in the cleanliness for the air circulating through the one’s home. Plus, a superior air filter helps keep the inner workings of the HVAC system cleaner. A thoroughly clean HVAC system means greater airflow, lower operational costs, superior reliability, and longer service life of the system. Additionally, the HVAC system with a superior filtration system will evenly distribute the air throughout the house, providing more comfort.
It was last spring when I learned about HVAC systems; I started talking about air filters with my company’s HVAC building contractor when he installed an air conditioner for one of our companies houses. I mentioned my issues with allergies and asthma, and he recommended upgrading the air filter in my personal system. Some air filters are more capable than others of capturing debris, like dust mites, mold spores, animal dander, bacteria, pollen, and dust particles. He explained that one cubic foot of air in the typical home contains over thirty million pollutants; this is why air filtering is super important.
In fact, The Environmental Protection Agency ranked indoor air pollution as one of the top five environmental risks against public health. Knowing this, I am now more diligent than ever about changing the air filters in the HVAC system regularly. I keep a supply of filters always ready, and I now spend a little more to get air filters using a higher MERV rating. The higher MERV rating means that the holes in the sift are much smaller. They trap a lot more contaminants but clog much a lot quicker. However, I feel they are worth the money; I have noticed a positive change in the cleanliness and breathability of my home.
